Supporting Neurodivergent Students with a focus on Autism & ADHD: Practical Approaches (online)

Objectives:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of what it is to be neurodivergent with a particular focus on autism and ADHD in students.
  • Explore (a) a number of key aspects of the lived experience of neurodivergent students including, sensory overload, difficulties with executive functioning and emotion regulation, interoception and proprioception difficulties, distractibility and/or hyper-focus, hyperactivity and the need to stim (b) and how this can impact their engagement and progression in university life.
  • Explore common difficult experiences that neurodivergent students may have lived through such as significant social rejection, exclusion, and humiliation, being frequently misunderstood and misjudged by peers, teachers, parents and other authoritative figures in their lives, to enhance sensitivity towards such students.
  • Identify practical approaches to support and accommodate neurodivergent students in their academic engagement and progression.
  • Connect to the true lived experience of such students via a live interview-style conversation with a few neurodivergent students in the university.
